'Feed The Bins' - Salford Council Anti-Litter Campaign

I created this Anti-Litter Campaign for Salford Council, named 'Feed The Bins', aimed at school aged children to encourage them to use the bins located around their school area.

I illustrated expressive monster mouths around the opening of the bins, presenting the bins as live entities that were hungry for rubbish and in feeding them you were satisfying their hunger.
I came up with the idea of pressure washing the shapes of monster footprints around the local area that would lead to the nearest bin, so that it was always easy to find somewhere to dispose of rubbish.

The technique of pressure washing was brilliant for the council as, using no materials other than the stencil for footprints and water, it was cost effective and easy. It also doubled up on the meaning of cleaning up our streets, as pressure washing uses water to remove dirt from the pavement, leaving behind the shape from the stencil, thus using cleaning up as a way of asking people to keep the streets clean.
The illustrations needed to be bold and exciting in order to capture the school children's attention. I allowed my pencil lines to twist and turn with little control so as to achieve the wonky gum lines giving birth to jagged teeth.
I then went into Adobe Photoshop and selected what colours would stand out against the black public bins.

Designing the monster mouths was especially fun for me as there was room to be expressive and this brief enabled me to contribute my ideas/concepts whilst keeping in line with the overall message that Salford Council wanted to get across in the campaign.
